CONSULTATE

Conversations in Kingborough

Kingborough Council

Goal

Public transport is an essential element in providing access to schooling and opportunities as well as addtressing equity issues. We wanted to find out how well served young people were with public transport. We discovered that many young people were unable to participate in activities and opportunities, facing isolation, alienation which contributed to negative mental health issues.

Style

The consultation was presented as a mobile talk show, with members of the community and stakeholders given the chance to talk about the realities they faced and the issues that needed to be overcome.

Impact

The video had a direct impact on the region with the Green Party using it to promote greater expenditure in public transport. The result, an increase in services and the development of a Park and Ride facility in Kingston. The video and accompanying consultation paper also won th 2010 Tasmanian Local Government Awards (Delivering Excellence for our Communities), and the, 2010 National Local Government Award (Youth Engagement).
